Being a parent is one of the most rewarding roles we can have in life, but it also can sometimes be one of the most challenging. When your child is having a problem in school, it can feel as if life has presented you with a lot of puzzle pieces, and you’re not sure how to put them together. Your child’s educational team, including teachers, special education coordinator, and staff are resources for identifying possible challenges to learning. They may tell you that your child seems not to be performing at her level of potential, or that her classroom behavior has become disruptive, or that she gets the right answer, but long after the other children have responded and moved on. They may observe that he cannot stay focused easily on the task before him, or that he seems to have trouble working in small groups.

When a problem arises, the team may recommend psychoeducational testing. This does not necessarily mean that your child has a learning disability or another serious problem. The recommendation for testing means that the team needs additional information to supplement their own extensive observations and assessments. Testing can provide not only a new source of careful and structured observation, but also two types of information:

What your child’s strengths and weaknesses are in learning and in demonstrating what is learned; and

How your child compares to other children of the same age.

The findings from testing can then be integrated with classroom and other information to put together the puzzle pieces and create a comprehensive picture of your child’s learning skill and potential.  Strategies are developed to emphasize strengths so that weaknesses are addressed and eliminated, and if needed, accommodations can be individually designed to help your child learn and work to full potential.

In addition, testing can identify special skills and abilities, and help you understand how your child learns best and what resources can assist in making the educational experience successful and enjoyable.  Children who show exceptional ability also benefit from testing that can demonstrate the need for an enriched or gifted learning environment.
